Colin Sargent is an Academy of American Poets prizewinner and U.S. Naval Academy graduate. As a Navy pilot, he flew helicopters over France, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Indian Ocean. In 1981, he was selected out of the fleet to become editor of APPROACH Magazine, the Navy's flying magazine, where he worked with contributors such as Tom Wolfe and published influential early studies on wind shear. He is currently founding editor & publisher of award-winning PORTLAND MAGAZINE, (www.portlandmonthly.com) est. 1985, with a readership of 100,000. An International Hemingway Competition finalist, he is the author of three books: LUFTWAFFE SNOWSHOES, 1984; BLUSH, 1987; and UNDERTOW, 1995, two of which were published via grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. His play, "One Hundred Percent American Girl," is a winner of the 2002 Acorn School's Maine Playwrights Contest with productions at the Portland Performing Arts Center, and the Maine Festival. He is the recipient of the 2003 Individual Artist Fellowship in Literature grant, in Poetry, awarded by Governor John Baldacci. He was awared a Stonecoast MFA in creative writing in 2004. He is the 2005 winner of 2nd Place, Third Annual Maine Screenwriting Competition, for his full length feature screenplay Montebello Ice at the Maine International Film Festival. He has just been named a member of the board of directors of Maine Reads. |
